DOI registration is a two-step process:
- Firstly, GLIS registers the newly assigned DOI to DataCite. The DOI is shown in red until this is accomplished, usually within a few minutes from DOI minting.
However, it may happen that the DataCite DOI registration service is unavailable for any reasons such as connectivity issues or service downtime. In this case, GLIS will periodically attempt to register the new DOIs until it succeeds.
- Then, DataCite propagates the newly assigned DOI across the Global DOI System, a process that may take up to 24 hours.
When the DOI is shown in green, it has been successfully registered on DataCite, but may not yet be globally known.
Trying to resolve a DOI that is not yet globally known on a system other than GLIS will result in an error.
