    The Inventory

This online version of the Inventory presents, for each measure, the title and a brief description with information on implementing organization(s), start year, objectives, core elements, key outcomes, and, if applicable, lessons learned. It thus allows users to quickly identify those examples that may be of interest to them. A hyperlink to the original submission is provided, which includes additional information, such as on the history and context of the presented measure, challenges encountered, or target groups reached. In this way, users can get a more comprehensive idea of the measure in question and the specific context for which it was developed.

To facilitate navigation, the Inventory is subdivided into eleven categories. Measures or practices that fall under more than one category are listed under each one that applies. Furthermore, information is provided on the type(s) of measures that are typically involved, such as technical, administrative, legal, and/or others, and on the relevant sub-article of Article 9 that is addressed. Additional search options allow searching by country, region, free text and keyword.

    231) Promotion of agrodiverse peasant farms

Cotacachi is a high Andean area considered as an important center of agrobiodiversity. In addition, it is an area with wide cultural and ethnic diversity. The inhabitants of indigenous communities have as their main economic activity peasant family agriculture, which is led by women, and this is the source of food and economic income for the family. Since 2001, the Union of Peasant and Indigenous Organizations of Cotacachi, Ecuador in collaboration with the Community Organization of Andean Women of Cotacachi have carried out the following objectives: promote a diversified agricultural production in accordance with the ecological, social and cultural conditions of the indigenous peasant communities; restitution of seeds at risk and with important characteristics for production; guarantee, as a priority, the production of food for the families' own consumption; generate complementary economic income for families, especially women; conserve native agrobiodiversity; preserve traditional knowledge; and train in agroecological management of farms, through the exchange of knowledge from farmer to farmer. Key components include: the promotion of peasant farms involves agriculture, livestock, water management, production of bio-inputs, agroforestry practices, training and knowledge exchange. This project has led to more peasant communities practicing diverse farming system, and an increase in family income by 20 percent.

    232) Facilitation of family farmers and their organizations' access to plant genetic resources for agroecological food production

Since July 2019, the National Commission for Rural Development, the Agroecology Network, and the National Network of Native and Creole Seed are implementing "Articulating Biodiversity in Family Farming Production project." The project brings together different stakeholders and institutions, including thousands of family farmers in Uruguay. The project objective is to facilitate farmers' access to plant genetic resources to address climate change variability in collaboration with the Collective Centers for the Protection of Agrobiodiversity (CCRA), INIA's Germplasm Bank (BG), and the Faculty of Agronomy (UDELAR), which provide genetic materials of diverse origins and receive native and creole varieties provided by farmers. These materials are evaluated and multiplied on family farms and are disseminated to family farming communities. Sharing and exchange of information are facilitated through meetings and training workshops. Among the main results, cooperation between and among the local producers' organizations, research institutions, and state bodies to establish evaluation and multiplication plots for fodder crops, deciduous fruit crops, horticultural and cereal crops. The main lesson learned highlights the importance of cooperation between and among the institutions, local producers/family farming communities, and other actors involved as a fundamental element for the implementation and realization of the rights of farmers and peasants.

    233) Seed exchange fair - Muyu Raymi (seed festival)

The seeds of the farmers in the indigenous communities of Cotacachi have been passed on from many generations. The initiative to promote seed fairs was started in 2003, and has been implemented by the Union of Indigenous Peasant Organizations of Cotacachi, Ecuador, the Community Organization of Andean Women of Cotacachi and the National Institute of Agricultural Research. The objectives include to: facilitate access to native seeds through farmer-to-farmer exchange; facilitate the exchange of traditional knowledge on conservation and use of native varieties among farmers; contribute to improving knowledge on the diversity and variability of farm seeds, among others. The initiative has the following key components: exhibition and exchange of native seed diversity; exhibition of the gastronomic food heritage of indigenous communities and assessment of the state of conservation of agrobiodiversity. The seed fair - Muyu Raymi (seed festival) has been held for 18 consecutive years. Other key outcomes include: 80 % of the participants are women in addition to having high participation of farmers from the canton’s rural communities and other areas of the country The seed fair is a mechanism for influence local public policies for the conservation and promotion of agrobiodiversity and traditional knowledge. The fair is also a space to give incentives to farmers in recognition of their important contribution to the conservation of traditional agroecosystems.
