Cocoa Agroforestry System of Sao Tome and Principe

This candidature of São Tomé and Príncipe's Cocoa Agroforestry System as GIAHS seeks to recognize this system's contributions to local society while ensuring its continuity. Many of its benefits, associated with system's diversity, are only now beginning to be understood. Many political actors of the country still maintain a sectorial vision, with policies and speeches aimed at increasing productivity of a specific crop to the detriment of others. The recognition of this Agroforestry System as a GIAHS will certainly help to strengthen the voice of Santomean farmers and agents who insist in producing cocoa in a sustainable manner, consistently in articulation with the production of other goods for the local market.
